RCD vs MCB vs RCBO Trips: What the Device Means

A trip on an RCD, MCB or RCBO is a clue, not the full diagnosis. In simple terms: RCD trips usually point to earth leakage, MCB trips usually point to overload or short circuit, and RCBOs can trip for either reason on a single circuit. Repeated tripping always deserves proper fault finding, especially if you cannot tie it to one appliance or one room.

RCD: what it is telling you

Typical causes of RCD trips

  • moisture or damp in outdoor fittings, sockets or cable runs
  • insulation breakdown in wiring
  • a faulty appliance with leakage to earth
  • too many appliances with small natural leakage currents on the same protected group
  • wiring faults that only show under load

Practical trade-off

RCDs offer wider protection, but that also means they can be more sensitive to leakage from appliances and connected equipment. That makes them useful, but sometimes harder to narrow down without testing.

MCB: what it is telling you

An MCB trips when current is too high for the circuit it protects.

Typical causes of MCB trips

  • too many appliances on one circuit
  • a socket or appliance fault causing excess current
  • a short circuit
  • a defective motor, heating element or cable

Practical trade-off

MCBs are usually easier to interpret than RCDs because they often point to a straightforward overcurrent problem. But a repeated MCB trip can still come from either the fixed wiring or a connected appliance.

RCBO: what it is telling you

An RCBO combines residual current and overcurrent protection for one circuit. If it trips, the fault is often limited to that circuit, but the exact cause may still be either earth leakage or overload.

Why RCBOs are useful

  • one fault is less likely to take out multiple circuits
  • it is often easier to isolate the problem area
  • they can make it simpler to identify whether one room or appliance is responsible

Practical trade-off

An RCBO gives more targeted protection, but it does not remove the need for diagnosis. It may still trip for damp, damaged appliances, wiring faults or overloading.

Which device usually points where?

If an RCD trips

Look first at:

  • damp or moisture
  • appliances with heating elements or motors
  • outdoor sockets and garden equipment
  • multiple connected items on the same RCD

If an MCB trips

Look first at:

  • overload on that circuit
  • a faulty appliance
  • a short circuit in a socket, plug or fixed fitting
  • an ageing circuit that may not suit current usage

If an RCBO trips

Look first at:

  • the same causes as above, but limited to one circuit
  • whether the trip happens with a specific appliance or at a certain time of day
  • whether the circuit is being asked to carry more than it was intended to

Maintenance and complexity

RCDs

RCD-protected circuits can be more involved to diagnose because one residual current issue may affect more than one circuit. That can make fault finding slower without the right testing.

MCBs

MCB faults are often more direct, but they still need checking if the same breaker keeps tripping after appliances are unplugged.

RCBOs

RCBOs can reduce disruption and help localise faults, but each device still needs correct testing and matching to the installation.

When neither option can be judged from the symptom alone

You usually need property-specific diagnosis when:

  • the trip is intermittent
  • the weather seems to affect it
  • several circuits are involved
  • the consumer unit has mixed ages or has been altered over time
  • you are unsure whether the problem is in an appliance, a socket, or fixed wiring
